I am currently investigating the profound linguistic layers surrounding the concept of death in Japanese culture. It is remarkable how the language transitions from the clinical "shibo" used in official documentation to the deeply spiritual "ojyodo" found in religious contexts.
I am particularly curious about the transition from physical existence to ancestral status. How do modern speakers balance these ancient, honorific terms with contemporary urban slang or more neutral expressions?
If anyone can provide examples of how these distinctions affect funeral etiquette or family discussions, it would be immensely helpful for my ethnographic study.
