Post-Hike Mess

After every weekend hike, my border collie comes home with burrs in his fur and mud up to his belly. I usually end up giving him a full bath, but now I'm worried I might be washing him too often. I've heard frequent baths can dry out their skin. How do I figure out the right schedule for a super active outdoor dog like him?
